Also on Big Pine Key is Blue Water Hole, a freshwater pond located in a former quarry that attracts turtles and alligators. There are many little water paths that meander through these dense forest like mangroves. It is a five-acre lagoon where guests can swim and interact with dolphins. Sand has to be regularly replenished at some of these shorelines because the coral reefs help prevent erosion and the build-up of sand. We had put off going to until our kids were a little older. We took a couple walks out there, on the beach and around the park, and Jake took his first ever dip in the Atlantic! The 50-foot catamarans have been customized for snorkeling with sun decks and shaded cockpits, stairways to the sea for easy water access, and bathrooms onboard. And be on the look out for dolphins in the ocean on the ride! They have watering stations at various shops around town, and there are even pet friendly restaurant patios where you can get a bite to eat. Perhaps next winter we can make it to the Everglades and Keys and try out some of your ideas. There are over 9,000 acres of land, which has pine forests, mangrove forests and wetlands. Reef charters go seven miles out and fish 70 to 280-foot depths for grouper, snapper, mackerel, porgies, and shark.
